WILD NATURE, PIEVS AND HERITAGES
Val di Merse is for sure the "wildest" area around Siena. Here there are two Natural Reserves along the river: Alto Merse and Basso Merse, this are protected areas rich of uncontaminated forests and a surprising biodiversity of animals and plant. The Merse Valley is the ideal place to connect with the wild nature of the Siena province, hike through the forests and discover the amazing vegetation of the surroundings.
Just in this charmed area of Tuscany we can find San Galgano a fascinating abbey that is still enchanting any visitor. This is a Cistercian Abbey near Chiusdino, completed in 1288 in honour of San Galgano but after the decline of the 14th and 15th centuries, its roof collapsed.
The Church, still now without roof, lets visitors to enjoy the view of the sky surrounded by the high walls of the ancient cathedral. In the nearby is also possible to see a sword in the stone, that is thought to be the same as inspired by many legends and chivalrous poems. This uniqueness make it one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Val di Merse and in the Province of Siena.
